Could my mom somehow get a FFI?

I know it might be a stupid question, but i was reading about a very rare prion disease-Fatal Familiar Insomnia, and heard that the most cases of this rare disease are located in Italy. Well, my question is simple, just of curiosity. My mom used to live in Italy for a while, and used to travel a lot in Italy for about a year, are there any risks that she could have some how get the “wrong” gene of that disease while living there? She has sometimes episodes of insomnia, but that is probably realted to stress, she’s 46 and we live in Serbia. Though she sleeps well now.

It may sound stupid, but i am somehow worried for her, and for me as well……

No, it is not possible. Your genes are given to you by your parents at conception and they don’t change according to where you live. There are only 50 people worldwide who have this disease and it just happens that the problem was discovered in Italy — however, living in Italy does not cause it.
