depression insomnia
Can depression cause insomnia and memory loss?

I’m seeing a therapist for my depression and am not on any medication but I’ve been getting insomnia and wondering how that could be related to depression. Also I’ve been losing my memory pretty badly to the point I wonder if I should see a neurologist, it’s kinda scary considering I”m relatively young and so am wondering if that could be related to depression though it wouldn’t seem like it. Why would I forget things if I’m not happy, ya know. Any ideas?

Insomnia (as well as over-sleeping) is definitely linked to depression. Memory loss has also been reported as a symptom for a lot of people who suffer from depression. It could also be related to your insomnia. Lack of sleep has many negative effects on the body and brain, including cognitive dysfunction.

I would talk to your therapist about a referral to a psychiatrist who can prescribe you something. You could even talk to your primary care physician about this. If your depression is having such negative effects on your physical health, you should really start an anti-depressant. You may also need a prescription sleep aid until your depression is under control and you can sleep better on your own.
